The majority of our wood pens are finished with CA (cyanoacrylate) has a durable, glossy, and plastic-like protective coating. While it is more resistant to moisture and wear than natural wood finishes, proper care will help maintain its shine and longevity.
Cleaning:
1. Wipe Regularly – Use a soft microfiber or cotton cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.
2. Avoid Abrasive Cleaners – Do not use alcohol, acetone, or harsh chemicals, as they can dull or damage the finish.
3. Use Mild Soap if Needed – If your pen gets dirty, lightly dampen a soft cloth with mild soap and water, then dry immediately.
Maintenance:
1. Polish Occasionally – If the finish becomes dull, use a plastic polish (such as Novus or Meguiar’s) to restore its shine.
2. Avoid Wax or Oils – Unlike raw wood pens, CA-finished pens do not absorb oils, so waxing is unnecessary.
Avoiding Damage:
1. Protect from Drops – A CA finish is strong but can still crack or chip if the pen is dropped on a hard surface.
2. Keep Away from Extreme Temperatures – Avoid prolonged exposure to high heat or freezing temperatures, as this can cause expansion and contraction, potentially leading to cracks.
3. Store Properly – Keep your pen in a case, pouch, or stand to prevent accidental scratches.
With minimal maintenance, a CA-finished pen will remain glossy and beautiful for years to come!
A polyurethane finish provides a protective barrier, making our wooden utensil handles more resistant to moisture and wear. However, proper care is still essential to maintain their durability and appearance.
Cleaning:
1. Hand Wash Only – Never put polyurethane-finished utensil handles in the dishwasher, as heat and moisture can degrade the finish over time. The majority of our utensils feature handles that unscrew from the metal components. The metal components are dish washer safe!
2. Use Mild Soap & Warm Water – Gently wash with a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid abrasive scrubbers that can scratch the finish.
3. Dry Immediately – Use a towel to dry thoroughly and allow the utensils to air dry completely before storing.
Maintenance:
1. Inspect for Wear – Over time, the polyurethane finish may wear down. If you notice dull spots or peeling, refinishing may be necessary.
2. Do Not Oil – Unlike raw wood utensils, polyurethane-coated utensils do not absorb oils or conditioners.
Avoiding Damage:
1. No Soaking – Prolonged exposure to water can cause the finish to break down and the wood underneath to swell.
2. Limit Heat Exposure – Do not leave utensils resting on hot cookware for extended periods, as excessive heat can soften or degrade the finish.
3. Avoid Harsh Chemicals – Do not use bleach, strong detergents, or abrasive cleaners, as they can break down the polyurethane coating.
Storage:
- Store in a dry place with good air circulation.
- Avoid tightly packed drawers that can cause unnecessary pressure and scratches on the finish.
With proper care, polyurethane-finished utensils will remain durable and beautiful for years!
Cleaning:
1. Hand Wash Only – Never put your board in the dishwasher. The heat and moisture can cause warping or cracking.
2. Use Mild Soap & Warm Water – Gently scrub the surface with a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid soaking the board.
3. Dry Immediately – Use a clean towel to dry the board and let it air dry standing upright.
Maintenance:
1. Oil Regularly – Apply food-grade mineral oil or a wood conditioner once a month or when the board looks dry.
2. Apply Wax (Optional) – A beeswax and mineral oil blend provides extra protection and a subtle shine. Our Board Butter is perfect for this!
3. Buff & Let It Absorb – After applying oil or wax, let the board sit for a few hours or overnight, then buff off any excess with a clean cloth.
Avoiding Damage:
1. No Prolonged Moisture – Do not leave the board in water or expose it to excessive moisture.
2. Limit Direct Heat – Keep the board away from hot pans or direct sunlight to prevent warping.
3. Use Both Sides – To prevent warping, alternate which side you use.
Removing Odors & Stains:
- Odors – Sprinkle coarse salt on the board, rub with half a lemon, and rinse.
- Stains – Make a paste with baking soda and water, scrub lightly, and rinse.
